Help build the next phase of Depot Software for the international tank container industry
Depot Software develops, implements, and supports mission-critical software for tank container depots (OMS/ERP). After more than 25 years, we are in a unique phase: we have the stability of an established organization, combined with the energy and ambition of a scale-up. The coming years will focus on continued growth, professionalization, and strengthening our organization.
As a market leader, our software is used every day by more than 100 customers worldwide. The software has evolved into an advanced platform with solutions for storage, cleaning, heating, maintenance, repair, invoicing, and compliance. Naturally, this journey has also resulted in technical legacy, creating the need to build a new generation of software with a modern, scalable architecture. We are already well underway and are looking for a capable leader to take this effort forward.
Your mission
The controlled migration of the existing application to this new platform is an important part of the role, but it is by no means the only responsibility.
We are looking for a full-time Chief Technology Officer who will provide end-to-end leadership for our technology and product development. You will lead the development team and help further professionalize and expand it. In addition, you will lead the product team, which consists of a product owner and product specialist. You will ensure that market insights, customer needs, and domain knowledge are translated into clear product choices, functional designs, and an executable roadmap.
As CTO, you will connect three areas of responsibility: leading and developing our people, defining and executing our product and technology strategy, and renewing our software platform in a controlled way.
This is not a CTO role at a distance from the technology. We are looking for a hands-on technical leader who can think strategically, take operational responsibility, and serve as a strong substantive sparring partner for developers, the product team, customers, and management.
What will you do?
- Lead the phased migration of the existing application to the new technology stack.
- Safeguard the stability, security, and performance of the existing software.
- Manage, coach, and further develop the product and development teams.
- Translate the business and product strategy into a concrete technical roadmap.
- Create a clear capacity plan and determine which expertise is needed internally or externally.
- Recruit, select, and onboard new technical colleagues and external development partners.
- Assess technical risks, dependencies, and investment proposals.
- Report on progress, capacity, quality, and technical risks.
The technical environment
The existing generation of software consists of a two-tier VB.NET WinForms desktop application on Microsoft SQL Server, supplemented by applications in technologies including Umbraco, Xamarin, and WPF. The mobile and web applications have already been migrated to Angular and React Native, while earlier versions for existing customers will continue to be supported for the time being.
For the new generation of software, we are migrating to a modern, API-first SaaS architecture while retaining Microsoft SQL Server. We use a code-first approach, with C# and Entity Framework for the backend, Angular for the frontend, and a clear separation between the presentation, application, domain, and data layers. The platform is hosted in Microsoft Azure and developed with security, reliability, and scalability in mind.
Experience with our full stack is not required. What matters more is that you have led comparable modernization initiatives and can make well-founded architecture and migration decisions.
What do you bring?
- Experience in software development and technical leadership roles.
- Experience managing and growing development teams, and preferably product teams as well.
- Demonstrated experience modernizing legacy software or large-scale software platforms.
- A strong background in software architecture, preferably within the Microsoft/.NET ecosystem.
- Experience with phased migrations in which existing and new technologies operate side by side for an extended period.
- The ability to connect technical choices to customer value, business continuity, and commercial objectives.
- Experience with capacity planning, recruitment, and deploying internal and external resources.
- Strong communication skills in Dutch and English, with the ability to make complex technical topics easy to understand.
What do we offer?
- A key role within the management team of a growing software organization, with a direct line to the CEO.
- Direct influence on the product strategy and the future of our platform.
- Plenty of room for ownership and initiative.
- The opportunity to shape a product organization that is ready for the next growth phase.
Our organizational philosophy
We do not believe in hierarchy for hierarchy’s sake. We believe in ownership.
Within our team, everyone has their own domain. Together, we are building an organization where responsibilities are clear, collaboration comes naturally, and success becomes a shared achievement.
